This blog explores my interest in photography, both digital and film. Many of the photographs are from Denver's streets, cemeteries, parks, zoo, hidden places, and surrounding areas.

Eyes Wide Open Exhibit
Today I went to Civic Center Park in downtown Denver where the American Friends Service Committee had their Eyes Wide Open exhibit about the human cost of the Iraq War. It's a very moving experience. Shoes and boots are used to symbolize the lost lives of Iraqis and U.S. soldiers. You can see more photographs at: Fields of Peace.

Tree on Mount Lindo
Today I drove up to Mt. Lindo, which is a cremation garden and cemetery near Morrison overlooking Turkey Creek Canyon. The east side of the mountain has the famous lighted cross that can be seen from Denver. It was a gray day with occasional rain. This tree seemed to reflect the changing mood of the seasons.
For a photograph of the famous cross see Mount Lindo Cross at the Cemeteries and Cemetery Symbols website.

Visiting Fairmount
I recently started working on a cemetery project (see link in the sidebar at right) so I visited Fairmount Cemetery yesterday in the almost rain.

The Other Side of South Park
These were taken yesterday overlooking a South Park valley. The cartoon South Park looks a little different—it's just over the hill.
Rocky Mountain Summer Rainstorm
I drove up to South Park on Monday and took these two pictures from the back porch of a friend's cabin just as a storm was approaching across the valley.

Motheater
Motheater live in world underneath Denver's normal music scene. They don't play in the known clubs or get written about in Westword. They don't know what a record label is for. Their shows almost seem like spontaneous happenings, spread by word of mouth and obscure Internet postings. I saw them last night at a tiny dark warehouse space on Brighton Boulevard, just beyond the railroad tracks and all those new overpriced lofts. Their music is a dark mass that moves with slow intensity. Look carefully beneath Denver's nightlife and you just might get to see them sometime.

Kinda Cool Accidental Blurry Mess
Here's a picture I took at the Denver zoo for a friend who likes tigers. It looks like he's bounding off into the forest, but he's really just pacing around in his cage. This blurry picture came out accidentally kinda cool...

Industrial Angles - Gates Rubber Company
This post was updated on February 11, 2008.
October 5, 2007: They have begun tearing down the old Gates Rubber Factory buildings. The top photo shows the large north building, still there. The middle one shows the south building on its way down. The third photo shows a workman dismantling the bridge that joins the south and north buildings over Mississippi Avenue. Beneath that you can see some photographs I took in 2006.
June 3, 2006: Today I went out to the old Gates Rubber Company buildings between Broadway and Santa Fe. They're going to be torn down soon so I thought I'd take some pictures before they turn this splendid eyesore into more urban sprawl.

Ghost Ranch, New Mexico
On the trip back home I decided to take Highway 84 north and a little west to Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. You can see why Georgia O'Keeffe loved the place so much - it's isolated and filled with all sorts of unusual colors.

New Mexico Churches and Pueblos
Today I visited two Pueblos and the Chimayo Church. Here is the belltower of the Catholic church in Santa Clara Pueblo...

San Francisco de Asis Church near Taos, New Mexico
I drove down to New Mexico yesterday and took these pictures outside the San Francisco de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos. The first four were taken last night and the fifth one was taken this morning on my way out of town.

Lions at the Denver Zoo
Today I visited Denver's zoo and took a few pictures of the Lions. The first two were taken inside the lion house looking out through the window. If you look close you can see a bit of glare from the window, which is why the photographs have a slightly soft look.
Having a drink.

May 1st Flags
Here are three more pictures from the May 1st Immigration Rally in Denver. The first and third ones were actually cropped from the same larger photograph.
